Ergonomic assessment on MEM thesis room

My project on our ergonomics class on the state of the MEM thesis room 👌

OVERVIEW:

The motivation for this project was upon seeing the sad state of our thesis room (argument can be made on how ugly and disorderly the room has been!!). As a concerned student, I wanted to check if I can apply ergonomics to quantify and detail its need for a remodelling in the hopes that the department takes proceeding action on it so that it can be sustained for future MEM students.

We highlight in our report issues with space (but thats a given na), lighting, and furniture, and proposes design improvements to create a more conducive environment for students working on their theses and capstone projects. The study aims to enhance student well-being and productivity by addressing these ergonomic concerns and implementing practical solutions.

FINDINGS:

We were able to quantify and provide key insights with the following proposal:

Improved Lighting: Adding ceiling lights to meet the OSHA standard of 107.6 lumens, especially in areas with low illumination.

Space Optimization: Re-arranging furniture to create collaborative workspaces with at least 100cm clearance for passageways, removing clutter, and providing open shelf racks for storage. The proposed floor plan can accommodate twenty-two people.

Ergonomic Workstations: Replacing chairs with adjustable ones, ensuring a 60-70cm eye-level distance to the table, and installing pop-up electrical outlets with cable management under tables.

Door Modification: Fixing or replacing the door knob for easier operation.

Room Management: Implementing a reservation system for room usage, especially during thesis/capstone project periods, and conducting regular inspections to remove clutter.

LEARNINGS:

This was a culmination of ergonomic techniques discussed in MFERGOP and LBYMF3G class like that of the following: anthropometric measurements, workspace/station analysis, lighting distribution and hazard analysis.

PS. Shoutout to Justine, Unas, Gian, Adam as my groupmates for this project.

Final report of our ergonomics assessment highlighting where we can further improve on this shared space!
